Cataract surgery recovery is by and large quick with little or no problems whatsoever. After cataract surgery procedure, the patients usually go home and rest for the rest of the day. After the surgery the doctor will usually perform a short “post operation procedure”. The cataract surgery recovery of the phacoemulsification procedure will more quick and uncomplicated. Patients who want to recovery quickly are advised to wear a protective shield over their eye or eyes to protect the eyes from injuries. Patients must also keep their eye clean.

  • Have a good rest two or three days after the surgery procedure.
  • Avoid bending and lifting a few days after the surgery procedure. Bending and lifting causes the increase of pressure on your eyes and will lead to a longer healing process.
  • Avoid touching or rubbing your eyes.
  • As much as possible stay indoors. If it is unavoidable, cover your eyes if it is windy or in case something blows in your eyes.
  • Do follow up visits to your doctor within a month or two. Be sure to have a follow up appointment the next day after the surgery procedure.
  • Wear an eye patch for a few days after the surgery procedure.
  • If you are experiencing some pain, loss of vision or notice some increase of redness in your eye or eyes, you must go to your doctor right away.
  • In most cases, if you experience some discomfort or some leaking of fluid in the eyes, avoid pressing the eyes. It will cause damage to the post operative eye. Just wipe any discharge with clean tissue or cloth without rubbing or touching the eyes.

Cataract surgery is the most common surgery procedure performed in the United States. Because of today’s advance technology and surgical techniques, it is one the most effective surgery procedures (with over ninety percent success rate). However as with any surgery, cataract surgery also has some risks. The most common cataract surgery risks are infection and bleeding.

The clouding of the back part of the capsule is also one of the cataract surgery risks. Swelling of the retina is one of the potential cataract surgery risks, although this risk tends to disappear after a few weeks. Below are some of the potential cataract surgery risks and complications:

  • Astigmatism – astigmatism can develop after the cataract surgery. However this can be treated through corrective lenses and has no effect on the vision.
  • Infection – although this type of cataract surgery risk is not common but still possible. That is due to negligence in sterile techniques.
  • Hemorrhage – stile not common but possible, this is sometimes cause by the placement of the incision in the cornea region of the eye.
  • Swelling of the Cornea – it is caused by the response of the eye from the surgical instrument that is inserted. Usually not noticed until a few hours after the surgery procedure. May cause distorted vision.
  • Glaucoma – the development of glaucoma is one of the potential cataract surgery risks. This is caused by some of the fluids used during the surgery which does not pass through the eye’s natural drainage system which causes an increase in pressure inside the eyes. Often marked with sharp pain in the eye region or headache. The pressure can be lower through medication.
  • Retinal Detachment – individuals who undergo cataract surgery increase their risk in developing retinal detachment. Individuals who undergo laser surgery procedure to cure the opacity of the lens covering after a cataract surgery procedure poses even greater risks in developing retinal detachment.

Some of the cataract surgery risks and complications can be treated with further surgery procedure. Some of theses complications may have some effect on your vision even with treatment.

However if you opt not to undergo cataract surgery, the cataract will slowly deteriorate your vision. Its effects can disrupt your abilities on your daily and nightly activities (the vision problems are even greater at night time).

There are many advantages if you choose to have your cataract removed. It can improve your color vision. Colors will be more vibrant and vivid. Visual acuity is greatly improved. The lens (intraocular lens) that is implanted on the cataract surgery will greatly decrease the focusing problems which lead to the reduced dependence on corrective eyewear. Although glasses may still be needed when reading or driving.

Vision in early cataracts can be improved by changing the prescription of your eyeglass, or by using a magnifying lens, or stronger lighting for close work. However if the interference caused by cataracts are intense wherein it affects your everyday lifestyle such as reading, working, or driving. Cataract surgery is needed to correct that.
Cataract surgery is the most effective and commonly performed surgical procedure in the United States. Patients who undergo cataract surgery experience improved vision after the surgery. There are two procedures in cataract surgery. These are the phacoemulsification and the extracapsular surgery.
Phacoemulsification
Phacoemulsification is the most common cataract surgery procedure. Small incision is made on the cornea’s side and a tiny probe is inserted into the eye. In today’s technology, laser probe or ultra sound is used to break the lens without harming the capsule. The debris is then suctioned for removal. A foldable intraocular lens (a clear, artificial lens that becomes a permanent part of the eye once inserted) is then inserted through the small incision. It then unfolds once the intraocular lens is inside the capsule. The incision is self sealing so no sutures are needed for this operation and the risk of astigmatism and rapid pressure changes within the eye are minimized. Phacoemulsification obtains best results if the patient is within the early stage of cataract. Phacoemulsification does not require special preparation though the measurement of your eye’s length and corneal curvature is essential in calculating the power of the intraocular lens that is to be inserted in your eyes. An estimated ninety percent of patients who undergo phacoemulsification attain a better vision.
Extracapsular Surgery
This type of cataract surgery requires a long incision in the cornea. The len’s hard center is removed in one piece while the rest of the lens is suctioned. The natural lens is removed and replaced with an intraocular lens (made of silicon, or a type of plastic known as PMMA, or acrylic). Multiple sutures are needed to fasten the eye after surgery. The sutures must be tight to prevent astigmatism. Light is then able to pass through the retina thus improving the vision. After this type of cataract surgery the patient usually sees a blue tint around everything they see, this is because the cataract, before it was removed, blocks colors such as blues and violets. When the cataract is removed, the colors blue and violent will once again become clearer. On the other hand there are several complications of this type of cataract surgery or is more known as “after-cataract”. After-cataract is a long term and common complication of patients who undergo this type of cataract surgery. Some part of the natural lens or the lens capsule that was not removed may become hazy and may deter vision months or years after the surgery. “YAG laser capsulotomy” is needed in order to treat this complication.

What are cataracts?

After the update video I had a friend ask for info on Cataracts, just so happens I went to another friend to get an eye exam and I too have early cataracts....so I am going to do a series on cataracts


What are cataracts?

 Any opacity and cloudiness that develops in the crystalline lens of the eyes are considered as cataracts. Cataracts are not formed on the eyes. It is formed within the eyes. Most people would think that a cataract is a film that grows on the eyes which causes blurred images or sometimes double vision. The eye lens is enclosed in a capsule. As the old cells die, it is trapped inside the capsule. As time passes the cell will eventually build up causing the eye lens to cloud, thus making images hazy and indistinctive. It is one of the major causes of visual loss among adult who are over 55 in the whole world.

What are the symptoms and signs of cataracts?

Cataracts at first are small, is has a very small effect of your sight at first. Its first symptom is that your vision will be blurred a little. Its symptoms depend on the location of the cataract on the lens and the cloudiness of the cataract. The most common symptoms are blurry visions, colors seem to appear faded, poor night vision and sensitivity to bright lights. The type of cataract will also affect what symptoms you will be experiencing. Nuclear cataracts first symptom is the improvement of your near vision. However this improvement will be short-lived and eventually will disappear as the cataract deteriorates. Subcapsular cataracts do not have any symptoms until it has fully developed.

What are the causes of cataracts?

Experts say that as we age the eye lens changes, forming cataracts. Experts are progressively distinguishing the factors that cause cataracts. Studies shows, that too much exposure to ultraviolet light is connected with the development of cataracts. They recommend that wearing sunglasses or wide brimmed hat will minimize the exposure of ultraviolet light. Further studies also show that individuals who are diabetic and users of major tranquilizers, diuretics and steroids tend to be at high risk of developing cataracts. Smoking, air pollution and alcohol abuse are also included in the risk factors. Eating foods that are rich in salt puts you on high risk of cataract development.

How to treat cataract.

Diets high in antioxidants (beta-carotene, selenium and vitamin C and vitamin E) helps prevent cataract development. If symptoms start to show you may be able to improve your eyesight with appropriate lighting, glasses, magnifying glass, strong bifocals and other visual aids. If your vision deteriorates badly and impairs your daily activities such as reading, working or driving, you should consider having your cataract removed by surgery. Cataract surgery is the most effective way of restoring your vision. In fact, cataract surgery is one of the most successful surgery procedures in the United States. An average or nine out of ten patients who undergo cataract surgery regain with a very good vision. There are two types of cataract surgery procedure. These are the phacoemulsification and the extracapsular surgery. Ask your ophthalmologist for the type of cataract surgery procedure that would be best for you.
 
There are three types of cataracts
Derived from the word “cataracta” which is a Latin word for “waterfall” and “kataraktes” which means “to wash down” in Greek. The eye lens work like camera lens. The light is focused into the retina at the back of the eyes. The lens aids the focus of the eyes letting the eyes see clearly.  The crystalline lens of the eyes is primarily made up of water and protein. The protein is naturally bonded together so that light may pass through. Cataract is formed when that bond changes and the molecules of protein are clump together. These clumps block the light entering the lens. As we age these clumps grow bigger and cloudier.
Researchers are not sure why the eye lens change as we age, thus forming cataracts. Although not common, cataract also occurs on young persons. These are sometimes caused by eye trauma, prescription drugs or chronic medical conditions. However they have identified some risk factors of which can cause cataract. These include the long-term exposure to ultraviolet light, secondary effects of diseases such as myotonic, dystrophy, diabetes and Wilson’s disease. Fetal exposure to radiation, alcohol and abuse of substances during pregnancy contribute a high risk factor. Smoking is one of the major risk factor of cataract.  Long term alcohol use leads to the development of cataract; this is because alcohol can lead to vitamin deficiency.  Vitamin C and vitamin E deficiency are said to may have linked to the development of cataract. Eye infection also is a major risk. A tumor may cause changes that will often lead to cataract development.
Cataracts are categorized into three types because the eye lens consists of three components. These are the nucleus or the center lens, the lens cortex or the periphery, and the membrane that envelops the lens or the capsule.  
Nuclear Cataract
The most common cataract found among older patients. This type of cataract develops in the nucleus. Nuclear cataract can take years to develop.
Cortical Cataract
This type of cataract forms in the peripheral area or the lens cortex area. Cortical cataract is common among patients who are diabetic. If left untreated it will sooner or later extend its spores into the center.
Subcapsular Cataract
Subcapsular cataract develops at the back of the lens area and sometimes in the center. Rapid symptoms can occur in just over month’s period.
In the early stages of cataract, cataracts tend to interfere with the vision. Causing blurred or hazy vision, however this can be improved by using new glasses, magnification, adequate lighting, strong bifocals or any other visual aid. But if the symptom worsens, making it difficult to do daily activities such as driving, reading or working it may need to be surgically removed by your ophthalmologist.
